PM, MWL Chief Discuss Gaza and Regional Peace
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a high-level meeting in Islamabad on Monday with Muslim World League Secretary General Sheikh Dr Mohammad bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa, with both sides focusing on regional peace, Gaza, interfaith cooperation and stronger Pakistan-MWL collaboration.
The meeting took place at the Prime Minister House during Dr Al-Issa’s visit to Pakistan for the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation Ministerial Conference on Women, held in Islamabad on July 12 and 13. The prime minister welcomed the MWL chief and underlined Pakistan’s interest in expanding cooperation with the Saudi-based organisation.
According to official details, the discussion covered education, humanitarian work, dialogue among faiths, countering extremism and responding to Islamophobia. Islamabad views these areas as important parts of its foreign policy engagement, especially at a time when Muslim communities are facing growing political, social and security pressures across different regions.
Prime Minister Shehbaz praised the Muslim World League’s role in promoting a balanced and tolerant image of Islam. He said the organisation’s work in encouraging unity, moderation, fraternity and dialogue had become increasingly important in a world affected by conflict, mistrust and religious polarisation.
The Gaza crisis also featured prominently in the conversation. The prime minister referred to the humanitarian emergency faced by Palestinians and stressed the need for sustained international engagement, while also discussing broader regional developments involving Iran and Gulf states.
Shehbaz also recalled Dr Al-Issa’s earlier visits to Pakistan, including his participation in the International Summit on Girls’ Education in Islamabad. The premier expressed satisfaction over ongoing cooperation between Pakistan and the Muslim World League in educational and humanitarian projects.
Dr Al-Issa thanked the Pakistani leadership for the hospitality extended to him and his delegation. He appreciated Pakistan’s role in the Muslim world and reaffirmed the MWL’s willingness to expand work with Islamabad in religious, educational and humanitarian fields.
The MWL chief also acknowledged Pakistan’s recent diplomatic role in regional peace efforts, including the contributions of Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir in connection with the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.
For Pakistan, the engagement carries diplomatic value beyond one meeting. Stronger cooperation with the Muslim World League can support Islamabad’s outreach on education, women’s empowerment, religious harmony and humanitarian diplomacy, while also reinforcing ties with Saudi-linked institutions at a time of regional uncertainty.
Both sides agreed to maintain close coordination and accelerate work on ongoing joint initiatives. Senior officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Foreign Secretary Amna Baloch, MNAs Farah Naz Akbar and Zeb Jaffar, also attended the meeting, while Saudi Ambassador Nawaf Saeed Al Malky accompanied the MWL delegation.
