Five Punjab Workers Killed in Balochistan Attack
Five labourers from Punjab were killed in Balochistan’s Washuk district after armed attackers opened fire in the Mashkel area, in a deadly incident that has renewed concern over the security of workers living and earning livelihoods away from their home districts.
According to police and local administration details, the victims were targeted at shops where they had been working. The attackers fired indiscriminately and escaped from the scene before law enforcement personnel reached the area.
Security forces and police later moved the bodies to a hospital for legal formalities and post-mortem procedures. Officials said a search operation was launched in the surrounding area to trace those involved, while investigators began collecting evidence and reviewing possible leads.
Deputy Commissioner Washuk Majid Sarparah said the deceased belonged to different districts of Punjab and had travelled to the area for work. Local officials identified the victims as Muhammad Hassan and Muhammad Qadeer from Pasrur in Sialkot, Mohsin from Narowal, and two men named Bilal from Khanpur in Rahim Yar Khan.
Balochistan government spokesperson Shahid Rind confirmed the killings and said the provincial authorities had taken notice of the attack. Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti strongly condemned the incident, expressed grief over the loss of innocent lives and directed law enforcement agencies to move swiftly against those responsible.
The attack has again highlighted the vulnerability of ordinary workers in parts of Balochistan, particularly those who migrate from other provinces in search of employment. Labourers, shop workers, barbers, masons and daily-wage earners often live in remote districts with limited protection, making them exposed during periods of heightened militancy.
Balochistan has faced repeated cycles of violence involving separatist militancy, targeted killings and attacks on security personnel, infrastructure and civilians. Authorities have frequently said that banned armed groups seek to destabilise the province and create fear among people working across ethnic and provincial lines.
The killing of workers from Punjab carries wider social and security implications for Pakistan. Such incidents can deepen anxiety among families, disrupt labour movement, affect local businesses and place additional pressure on the provincial government to strengthen intelligence-led policing in vulnerable districts.
Officials said investigations are continuing and security has been tightened in the area as law enforcement agencies pursue the attackers. The immediate focus remains on identifying those behind the firing, securing the affected locality and ensuring that the victims’ bodies are returned to their families with proper legal documentation.
