Lahore Deploys AI Drones to Tackle Traffic Gridlock
LAHORE: The Lahore traffic police have formally introduced a fleet of artificial intelligence-powered drones to monitor traffic congestion in real time, marking a major shift in how Pakistan’s second-largest city plans to manage road pressure, violations and bottlenecks.
The system has been designed to move traffic monitoring beyond fixed CCTV cameras and manual road inspections. Instead of relying only on ground reports, traffic authorities will now use aerial footage from congested routes to understand why vehicles are slowing down and where enforcement is needed most.
Officials said the drones are equipped with thermal and high-definition cameras and will be deployed above key arteries, busy markets and choking points across Lahore. The footage will help traffic police identify illegal parking, encroachments, one-way violations and other disruptions that reduce road capacity during peak hours.
The recorded video will not simply be stored as routine surveillance material. According to the traffic police, the footage will be processed through locally developed AI software that can analyse road conditions, detect obstructions and support data-based decisions for enforcement and traffic engineering.
Chief Traffic Officer Lahore Abdul Raheem Shirazi said drones would be sent immediately when congestion is reported so that officials can examine the actual cause from above. He said the system would provide real-time intelligence while also helping authorities improve long-term planning for smoother commuter movement.
The new aerial monitoring setup is also expected to support action against smoke-emitting vehicles, a major concern in Lahore due to recurring air pollution and winter smog. Authorities said the drones would assist in identifying vehicles, roadside activity and traffic behaviour that contribute to both congestion and environmental pressure.
Lahore has struggled for years with traffic jams caused by rapid urban growth, commercial encroachments, roadside parking, school and office rush hours and limited discipline on several busy corridors. Traditional traffic policing often becomes reactive, with wardens reaching problem spots only after congestion has already built up.
The use of AI-powered drones could give the city a more preventive model. By combining aerial visibility with software-based analysis, traffic managers may be able to identify repeated chokepoints, redesign traffic flows, adjust deployments and recommend physical changes where road layouts are contributing to daily gridlock.
For citizens, the impact will depend on how consistently the technology is used and whether the information collected leads to visible improvements on the road. Better monitoring could reduce travel delays, fuel waste and commuter frustration, but public trust will require transparent enforcement and protection against misuse of surveillance tools.
The next phase will be crucial as Lahore traffic police expand drone deployment and test whether the technology can deliver practical results during peak congestion hours. If the system succeeds, it could become a model for other Pakistani cities facing similar traffic, pollution and urban mobility challenges.
