PIA Restarts Lahore-Manchester Flights After Six Years
Pakistan International Airlines resumed direct flight operations between Lahore and Manchester on Thursday, marking the return of an important international air link after a six-year gap. The first outbound flight from Lahore departed for Manchester with hundreds of passengers on board, restoring a route considered significant for Pakistani families, overseas workers, students and business travellers connected to the United Kingdom.
According to the airline’s statement cited in the report, flight PK-709 took off from Lahore carrying 325 passengers. The departure was preceded by an inaugural ceremony at Lahore airport, where PIA Chief Operating Officer Khurram Mushtaq saw off the travellers and formally marked the restart of the service.
The resumption comes shortly after the first Manchester-to-Lahore flight left the British city on Wednesday night, completing the initial phase of the route’s revival. PIA now operates five weekly flights between Pakistan and Manchester, with four services from Islamabad and one from Lahore, giving passengers from Punjab a direct option after years of reliance on connecting routes.
In its statement, PIA said the Lahore-Manchester operation would support stronger people-to-people connections between Pakistan and the United Kingdom. The airline framed the development as part of its wider return to key international destinations after years of restrictions and reputational challenges that severely affected its global operations.
The route is particularly important because Manchester and surrounding areas are home to a large Pakistani-origin community with deep family, cultural and business links to Punjab. Direct flights can reduce travel time, simplify journeys for elderly passengers and families, and make it easier for overseas Pakistanis to visit Lahore without multiple stopovers.
PIA’s return to major UK routes follows a difficult period for Pakistan’s aviation sector. Pakistani airlines were barred from operating in the European Union, the United Kingdom and the United States in 2020 after a PIA aircraft crash in Karachi and subsequent concerns about pilot licensing and aviation safety oversight.
The European Union Air Safety Agency lifted its ban on PIA in November 2024 after more than four years. The United Kingdom later removed Pakistan from its Air Safety List in July 2025, allowing Pakistani carriers to seek approval for operations to Britain again. PIA subsequently received approval to resume direct flights to the UK in September 2025.
The restoration of the Lahore-Manchester connection is also commercially important for the national carrier as it tries to rebuild passenger confidence, increase international revenue and strengthen its position on routes with strong diaspora demand. Direct UK flights have historically been among PIA’s most valuable operations because of the large Pakistani community living in Britain.
For Pakistan, the development carries wider economic and social value. Better air connectivity can support tourism, trade travel, remittances-related movement, family reunions and business links between Punjab and the UK. It also provides an opportunity for the aviation sector to show that safety reforms and operational improvements can translate into restored international access.
The next test for PIA will be consistency. The airline will need to maintain punctual operations, customer confidence and regulatory compliance while gradually expanding its international network. If the Lahore-Manchester route performs well, it could strengthen the case for more direct services from Pakistani cities to major UK destinations in the months ahead.
