Pakistan Launches Rs4.5bn Chip Design Training Push
Pakistan has announced a Rs4.5 billion semiconductor and chip design training initiative aimed at preparing thousands of young engineers for high-value technology jobs. The programme was highlighted in Islamabad on Thursday, where Federal IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja said the government wanted to strengthen Pakistan’s digital workforce and connect skilled graduates with emerging global demand.
Under the initiative, around 7,200 engineers will receive specialised training in semiconductor technologies, chip design and related technical fields. The plan is being positioned as a major step toward developing local expertise in an industry that powers smartphones, vehicles, data centres, defence systems, medical devices and artificial intelligence tools.
The minister said approximately 300 students are already undergoing training at different universities under the programme. The training model is expected to combine classroom learning with practical exposure, allowing participants to understand the tools, design processes and technical workflows used in the global semiconductor ecosystem.
Shaza Fatima Khawaja said the central purpose of the initiative is to improve employability for young Pakistanis by giving them advanced skills that are increasingly valued by international technology companies. She also said independent third-party assessments are carried out after each training cycle to review the programme’s quality and measure whether participants are moving toward employment.
The announcement comes as Pakistan attempts to shift a larger share of its economy toward technology-led services and knowledge exports. While the country has a growing pool of software developers and IT graduates, semiconductor design requires a deeper and more specialised talent base, including expertise in integrated circuits, verification, electronic design automation tools and system-level engineering.
Pakistan’s technology sector has long faced a gap between university education and industry requirements. Many engineering graduates enter the labour market without enough hands-on training for specialised global roles. A structured semiconductor training programme could help narrow that gap if universities, private firms and government agencies coordinate effectively.
The initiative also fits into a wider policy push to promote high-tech industries and digital skills. Officials have repeatedly argued that Pakistan must move beyond basic services and develop capacity in advanced technology areas where skilled workers can earn higher incomes, attract foreign projects and support future local innovation.
For Pakistan’s economy, the potential impact goes beyond training numbers. If implemented well, the programme could create a pipeline of engineers capable of working with international chip design firms, contributing to export earnings and helping Pakistan enter a sector usually dominated by more advanced technology markets.
The next challenge will be execution. The government will need to ensure that training centres have qualified instructors, updated design tools, credible evaluation systems and direct links with employers. The success of the initiative will ultimately be judged not only by how many engineers are trained, but by how many secure meaningful roles in Pakistan’s technology economy and the global semiconductor value chain.
