PM Praises Security Teams as Ashura Ends Peacefully

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday praised Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, the Ministry of Interior, security institutions and law-enforcement agencies for ensuring that Ashura observances concluded peacefully across Pakistan. The statement came after processions and religious gatherings were held under extensive security arrangements in major cities, towns and sensitive areas.

The prime minister said coordinated planning by federal and provincial authorities helped maintain order during one of the most sensitive periods of the religious calendar. Security remained tight around mourning processions, imambargahs, mosques, public routes and key urban centres as millions of people participated in Muharram-related activities.

According to the report, PM Shehbaz specifically appreciated the role of the Interior Ministry and its team for supervising countrywide arrangements. He also acknowledged the contribution of the Pakistan Armed Forces, police and other law-enforcement agencies, whose personnel were deployed to protect participants and prevent any disruption.

In an official reaction, the prime minister said Ashura-related activities had been completed in a peaceful atmosphere due to the collective efforts of security personnel, administrators and provincial governments. He also praised the governments of Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir for carrying out effective measures.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also issued a message on X, where he paid tribute to law-enforcement personnel who remained on duty during the first ten days of Muharram and especially through the final 24 hours of Ashura. He described their performance as professional, committed and courageous, saying the nation was proud of their service.

Ashura security operations in Pakistan usually involve multiple layers of coordination, including route clearance, surveillance, intelligence-sharing, traffic management, emergency medical support and restrictions around sensitive locations. Mobile services and road access are often managed in certain areas depending on threat assessments and local security requirements.

This year’s peaceful conclusion carries political and administrative importance because Muharram security is closely watched by citizens, religious communities and government institutions. Any failure in coordination can quickly raise concerns about public safety, sectarian harmony and the state’s ability to manage large-scale gatherings.

For Pakistan, the successful completion of Ashura arrangements may strengthen public confidence in coordinated policing and civil-military support during high-risk public events. It also places renewed attention on the need for year-round preparedness, improved surveillance systems and better emergency response capacity in crowded religious and civic spaces.

The next step for authorities will be to review the security operation, identify gaps and preserve the coordination model for future religious events.
