KP on High Alert as PDMA Warns of Glacial Flood Risk
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority has issued a fresh alert for several upper districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa after rising temperatures increased the threat of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods. The warning was issued on Saturday as authorities moved to place vulnerable mountain communities, rescue teams and district administrations on emergency watch.
According to the advisory, the risk has grown because intense heat is accelerating glacier melt in northern areas. PDMA officials warned that sudden glacial lake breaches could trigger fast-moving floods, landslides and dangerous water flows in valleys located near rivers, streams and glacier-fed channels.
The authority directed administrations in Upper Chitral, Lower Chitral, Swat, Upper Dir, Kohistan and Mansehra to immediately strengthen monitoring and preparedness arrangements. These districts contain several sensitive mountainous zones where a rapid rise in water levels can threaten homes, roads, bridges, fields and tourist routes with little warning.
A PDMA spokesperson said local officials must keep a close watch on vulnerable glacial locations and maintain constant coordination with rescue and emergency response departments. The authority also instructed rescue agencies to keep personnel, machinery and emergency equipment ready so that any developing situation can be handled without delay.
The alert also carries a direct public safety message for residents and tourists. Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel toward rivers, streams and glacial areas, while communities living near fast-flowing water channels have been urged to remain cautious and follow official instructions if evacuation becomes necessary.
Officials have asked district administrations to issue timely warnings to at-risk communities and shift people to safer places if conditions worsen. In an emergency, citizens have been advised to contact the PDMA helpline at 1700 for assistance, information and disaster-related coordination.
Glacial Lake Outburst Floods are among the most serious climate-linked hazards facing Pakistan’s northern belt. They occur when water collected in a glacial lake suddenly escapes through weak natural barriers, releasing a large volume of water that can rush downstream with destructive force.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan have repeatedly faced flash floods, landslides and climate-related disasters in recent years, especially during periods of extreme heat and intense rainfall. Mountain communities remain highly exposed because many settlements are located close to rivers, narrow valleys and unstable slopes.
The latest alert is important for Pakistan because it comes at a time when climate risks are placing growing pressure on local administrations, emergency services and infrastructure. Damage from sudden floods can affect tourism, agriculture, transport links and access to basic services in already remote regions.
