9th Muharram Processions Held Across Pakistan Amid Tight Security

Mourning processions for the 9th of Muharram were held across Pakistan on Thursday as thousands of participants gathered in major cities and smaller towns to commemorate the martyrs of Karbala. The nationwide observances took place under extensive security arrangements, with authorities focusing on crowd safety, route protection and uninterrupted completion of traditional processions.

In Karachi, the main procession began from Nishtar Park and moved along its established route through the city’s central areas. Participants offered Zuhrain prayers near Imambargah Ali Raza on M.A. Jinnah Road before the procession continued toward Hussainia Iranian Imambargah in Kharadar, one of the most important destinations for the city’s Muharram gatherings.

Large numbers of mourners also gathered in Peshawar, Lahore, Islamabad and Quetta, where Zuljanah and Alam processions followed designated routes. In Peshawar, major processions were taken out from Imambargah Hussainia Hall in Saddar and Imambargah Bibi Sahiba in Tehsil Ganj, while additional gatherings were organised from various imambargahs ahead of Ashura.

Officials said security plans were implemented across sensitive routes with police, Rangers, Counter-Terrorism Department personnel, traffic teams, bomb disposal units and surveillance systems deployed in different cities. In Peshawar alone, more than 12,000 police officers and personnel were assigned to duty, while Islamabad used a three-tier security plan supported by Safe City monitoring and scanners at entry points.

The security measures included partial suspension of mobile phone services in several areas, restrictions on private drone use and strict monitoring of entry and exit points. Roads connected to key procession routes were sealed in advance, while CCTV cameras and drone surveillance were used in selected locations to prevent any disruption during religious gatherings.

In Lahore, the central procession emerged from Pando Street in Islampura and moved through its traditional path before returning to the starting point. Participants remembered the message of Imam Hussain (RA), with scholars and speakers highlighting sacrifice, faith, patience and resistance against injustice as the central themes of the Karbala tragedy.

Quetta also remained under heightened security as the 9th Muharram procession was taken out from Imambargah Nasir-ul-Aza and moved through its planned route before ending at Usman Road. Mobile phone services in Quetta and surrounding areas remained suspended for two days as part of broader precautionary measures linked to Muharram security.

The observances were not limited to provincial capitals. Processions and majalis were also reported in Vehari, Raiwind, Hafizabad, Wazirabad, Sargodha, Renala Khurd, Shorkot, Rajanpur, Gujranwala, Jalalpur Pirwala, Chunian, Toba Tek Singh, Sheikhupura, Taxila and other towns, showing the countrywide scale of Muharram commemorations.

Volunteers, local organisers and charitable groups set up sabeels, food points and refreshment stalls for participants along the routes. The distribution of water, milk, meals and beverages reflected a long-standing tradition of service during Muharram, with organisers describing it as a tribute to the sacrifices remembered during the month.

For Pakistan, the peaceful conduct of 9th Muharram processions is significant because the period requires coordination between religious organisers, district administrations, law-enforcement agencies and emergency services. Authorities will remain on alert for Ashura, when larger processions and gatherings are expected across the country, making security discipline and public cooperation central to the next phase of arrangements.
