Sargodha Child Murder Suspect Killed in CCD Encounter
The prime suspect in the murder case of a seven-year-old girl in Sargodha was killed during an alleged Crime Control Department encounter early Wednesday, police officials said. The development came only a day after the case triggered public outrage following the recovery of the child’s body from a shop where she had reportedly gone to buy household items.
According to police, the suspect had been accused of attempting to sexually assault the child before killing her. He had earlier been arrested along with several other suspects, while investigators were examining the role of each person named or detained in connection with the crime.
Sargodha Regional Police Officer Shahzad Asif Khan confirmed that the main suspect had died during an encounter involving CCD personnel. Police said the suspect had allegedly escaped custody on Tuesday and was later located during an operation in the Mitha Lak area.
A fresh FIR registered by a CCD station house officer claimed that the suspect was standing near Sem Nala with three unidentified persons when a police team arrived. The FIR alleged that the men opened fire on the police party, after which the team took defensive positions and returned limited fire.
The police account states that the firing continued for several minutes and that a constable was injured in the exchange. When the shooting stopped, officials said they found the prime suspect dead in nearby bushes and claimed he had been hit by firing from his own accomplices, while the remaining men escaped in darkness.
Sargodha District Police Officer Sohaib Ashraf said three other suspects arrested in the child murder case remain in custody. Police also said the body of the deceased suspect was shifted to Faisal Masood Teaching Hospital for post-mortem examination, while items allegedly recovered from him were taken into custody.
The case has shaken Sargodha because of the age of the victim and the circumstances under which she disappeared. Her father had reported that she went to a nearby shop and did not return, after which the family searched for her and later found her critically injured inside the premises.
The wider controversy now involves not only the original murder investigation but also questions surrounding the suspect’s reported escape and death in custody-linked circumstances. Human rights groups and civil society voices have previously raised concerns over alleged encounter killings by the CCD, making transparency in this case especially important.
For Pakistan, the incident has renewed public anger over crimes against children, delays in protection systems and the handling of serious criminal investigations. The next steps will depend on the post-mortem findings, the status of the remaining suspects, and whether authorities provide a clear explanation of how the prime suspect allegedly escaped and was later killed.
