PPP’s Amjad Hussain Elected Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister
Amjad Hussain Advocate has been elected as the fifth chief minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, marking a major political development in the region after the formation of its new assembly. The Pakistan Peoples Party leader’s election was reported from Gilgit on Tuesday and signals the start of a new administrative phase in the strategically important northern region.
The election places the PPP at the centre of governance in Gilgit-Baltistan at a time when the region faces expectations around development, infrastructure, tourism, employment and stronger institutional delivery. Amjad Hussain’s elevation is also politically significant because Gilgit-Baltistan often reflects wider party alignments and national-level coalition dynamics.
According to the reported details, Amjad Hussain is a senior PPP figure with decades of experience in regional politics. He is the son of the late Asif Khan, who was also associated with the party and remained a known political name in the area, giving the newly elected chief minister a family background rooted in public life.

Amjad Hussain’s political journey began in student politics in 1996 before he moved into mainstream public affairs and legal practice. He later became active in the legal community and built his profile as a lawyer, eventually serving as a member of the Gilgit-Baltistan Bar Council and practising before the Supreme Appellate Court.
His earlier role as a member of the Gilgit-Baltistan Council between 2010 and 2015 gave him experience in legislative and administrative affairs. In 2016, he was appointed provincial president of the PPP in Gilgit-Baltistan, further strengthening his standing within the party’s regional structure.
The new chief minister has also previously demonstrated electoral strength, including victories from two constituencies in the 2020 elections. That background is likely to help him manage the political expectations of party workers, assembly members and voters who will now look for visible progress under his leadership.
Alongside the chief minister’s election, PML-N leader Hafiz Hafeez-ur-Rehman has been elected as Leader of the Opposition in the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly. His role will be important in shaping parliamentary debate, holding the new government accountable and influencing the tone of government-opposition relations.
Gilgit-Baltistan remains vital for Pakistan because of its tourism potential, border connectivity, hydropower prospects and role in national development planning.
