Two Bodies Found in Karachi Drain as Police Await Post-Mortem

Police in Karachi recovered the bodies of a young man and woman from a drainage channel in Surjani Town on Wednesday, triggering an investigation into the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

According to the report, the bodies were found in the Rozi Goth nullah, a drainage channel in the Surjani area. Authorities later identified the deceased as 25-year-old Shumaila and 24-year-old Mohammad Ali.

Police officials said the two individuals were residents of the nearby locality. Initial information shared by investigators suggested that the man and woman had been living together, though they were not married.

Officials also said the woman belonged to the Saraiki community, while the man was of Bengali origin. Police further stated that both were believed to be drug users, but the exact circumstances of their deaths have not yet been formally established.

In their preliminary assessment, police said no obvious marks of torture or violence were visible on the bodies. However, investigators cautioned that a final conclusion could only be reached after post-mortem examinations and medical reports are completed.

The bodies were shifted to a hospital for medico-legal formalities. Police said the medical process would help determine whether the deaths resulted from drowning, intoxication, illness, foul play or another cause.

Karachi’s drainage channels and open nullahs have repeatedly become sites of tragic discoveries, especially in densely populated areas where weak infrastructure, poverty, addiction and limited social support often intersect. Such cases usually require both forensic investigation and community-level verification.

The recovery has also drawn attention to the vulnerability of people living on the margins of the city. Individuals affected by addiction or homelessness often remain outside formal protection systems, making them more exposed to violence, medical emergencies and accidental deaths.

For investigators, the next steps include reviewing statements from local residents, tracing the movements of the deceased before their deaths and awaiting the post-mortem findings. Police have indicated that the direction of the case will depend largely on the medical evidence.

The incident remains under investigation, and authorities are expected to decide whether to register a criminal case after receiving the final examination report. Until then, officials have avoided confirming the cause of death.
