KP on Alert as Glacier Flood Risk Rises in Northern Districts
Authorities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have issued an urgent alert over the threat of glacier lake outburst floods in the province’s northern districts, warning that a combination of high temperatures and expected heavy rain could create dangerous conditions in mountainous areas.
The advisory was issued as upper parts of the province entered a sensitive weather period, with officials concerned that warmer conditions may speed up snow and glacier melt. The warning is particularly relevant for communities living near streams, rivers and valleys connected to glacial terrain.
According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority, temperatures in most districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are expected to remain elevated until May 31. The authority said sustained heat can increase the volume of meltwater flowing from snowfields and glaciers into natural lakes and waterways.
The provincial emergency operations centre also identified Chitral, Dir, Swat and Kohistan among the districts where heavy rainfall is likely. Officials warned that intense downpours in these areas could combine with rapid melting and trigger flash floods or sudden glacier lake outbursts.
In its instructions to district administrations, the PDMA directed local authorities to strengthen preparedness, keep monitoring systems active and maintain close coordination with rescue and emergency response departments. Relevant agencies have also been asked to ensure early warning mechanisms remain functional.
Officials further instructed rescue teams to keep machinery, vehicles and emergency equipment ready in case roads are blocked, water channels overflow or communities require urgent evacuation. The warning also noted that strong water flows in streams and rivers could become dangerous for vehicles and pedestrians.
Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, postpone visits to risky locations and follow instructions from local authorities. People living near waterways were also urged to move livestock, household valuables and other essential belongings to safer places where necessary.
Glacier lake outburst floods are a recurring threat in Pakistan’s northern regions, where climate stress, rising temperatures and fragile mountain geography have increased the risk of sudden flooding. Such events can damage roads, bridges, homes, crops and local infrastructure within a short period of time.
The latest alert is important for Pakistan because northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is both a tourism zone and a home to remote communities that often face limited access during emergencies. A timely warning can reduce loss of life if people avoid dangerous routes and authorities respond quickly.
