Bannu Clash Leaves 12 Militants Dead as Bomb Plot Foiled
A major security clash erupted in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bannu district on Saturday, leaving 12 militants dead and one man killed during intense fighting between police-linked peace committee members and armed attackers. The confrontation took place in the Barakzai Akhundkhel area of Miryan tehsil, where law enforcement officials said the situation remained tense after a heavy exchange of fire.
According to district police officials, the fighting began when militants engaged a police party and local peace committee members in the area. Security personnel returned fire and later confirmed that a dozen attackers had been killed during the operation, while four policemen sustained injuries.
The deceased civilian was identified by hospital officials as a retired member of the Federal Constabulary. His body was shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital, while injured personnel were provided medical treatment as reinforcements moved into the affected locality.
Bannu District Police Officer Yasir Afridi confirmed the militant casualties and said police action had prevented the situation from turning into a wider security disaster. Local officials also reported that the police party managed to reach safety after resisting the attackers and calling additional support.
The clash was followed by another serious security development in the district when police defused a 10-kilogramme remote-controlled explosive device near Gul Zaman Mosque on the Bannu-Miranshah Road. The timely action by the bomb disposal squad helped avert what officials described as a potentially major tragedy in a busy public area.
Bannu has remained one of the most sensitive districts in Pakistan’s renewed counterterrorism campaign, particularly because of its proximity to former tribal regions and militant movement routes. Police stations, checkpoints and security personnel have repeatedly been targeted in the broader wave of violence affecting Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The latest incident comes amid a visible resurgence of militant attacks in KP and Balochistan since the Afghan Taliban returned to power in Kabul in 2021. Islamabad has repeatedly urged Afghan authorities to act against sanctuaries used by the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan, while Pakistani security forces have expanded intelligence-based operations at home.
The impact of the Bannu clash is likely to be felt beyond the immediate area, as it highlights the continuing pressure on police and local security networks in frontline districts. For residents, recurring gun battles and bomb threats deepen fears over mobility, livelihoods and public safety.
