Sindh Declares Four-Day Eidul Azha Holidays for 2026

The Sindh government has announced a four-day public holiday schedule for Eidul Azha 2026, giving government and semi-government employees across the province an extended break next week. The decision was issued on Friday and immediately became one of the most widely followed public-interest updates ahead of the religious festival.

According to the provincial notification, holidays will be observed from Tuesday, May 26, to Friday, May 29. The decision applies across Sindh and covers government offices, semi-government institutions and municipal bodies, allowing departments and employees to plan official closures around the Eid period.

The announcement comes after the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee confirmed the sighting of the Zilhajj moon, setting Eidul Azha for May 27 in Pakistan. With the religious calendar now confirmed, provincial authorities moved to finalise their own administrative holiday arrangements for public-sector institutions.

Officials said the holiday schedule will not apply to staff working in essential services or those assigned to budget-related responsibilities. This exemption is important because several administrative, health, municipal, emergency and financial functions must remain active even during festival closures.

The Sindh schedule is broader than the federal government’s Eid holiday plan, which was approved by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for three days from May 26 to May 28. Sindh’s decision to include May 29 gives provincial employees an additional day off compared with the federal announcement.

Eidul Azha is one of the most important religious occasions in Pakistan, marked by prayers, animal sacrifice, family gatherings and large-scale travel between cities and hometowns. Holiday announcements are closely followed each year because they affect transport planning, market activity, office operations and public-service arrangements.

The four-day break is expected to increase movement across Sindh, especially in Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur and other urban centres where families often travel before Eid. Markets for sacrificial animals, food items, transport services and household shopping are also likely to remain busy in the days leading up to the holidays.

For public institutions, the announcement gives departments time to manage pending work before the break begins. It also allows municipal authorities to prepare Eid-related cleanliness, waste disposal and animal remains management plans, which are usually major responsibilities during and after the festival.

The decision is likely to be welcomed by many employees and families, but it also places pressure on essential-service departments to maintain readiness during a high-demand period. Hospitals, rescue teams, local bodies, traffic police and utility services are expected to remain central to public convenience throughout the holiday stretch.

With Sindh’s holiday schedule now confirmed, attention will shift to travel arrangements, market regulation, security plans and municipal preparedness ahead of Eidul Azha. Provincial departments are expected to continue issuing operational instructions as the festival approaches.
