Lakki Marwat Market Blast Kills Nine as Terror Wave Rises

A deadly explosion ripped through a crowded market in Lakki Marwat’s Sarai Naurang area, killing at least nine people and injuring 33 others in one of the latest major terror incidents to hit Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. The blast struck Phatak Chowk along the GT Road, where shoppers, commuters and traders were present.

Police and district officials said the attack targeted a busy public space at a time when traffic and market activity were at their peak. Two traffic police officials were among those who lost their lives while performing duty between Bannu and Dera Ismail Khan.

Initial findings suggested that explosives had been planted in a motorcycle parked near the market. Rescue teams shifted the wounded to Sarai Naurang Tehsil Headquarters Hospital, while five critically injured victims were referred to hospitals in Bannu and Peshawar for urgent treatment.

Regional Police Officer Sajjad Khan said the martyred traffic officials, identified as Adil Jan and Rahatullah, were on routine duty when the explosion occurred. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed grief over the loss of life and directed authorities to identify and arrest those responsible without delay.

The attack caused damage to shops, rickshaws and vehicles, leaving debris scattered across the market. Bomb disposal experts collected forensic evidence from the site, while police cordoned off the area and launched a wider investigation into the network behind the bombing.

The blast came only days after a major attack on the Fateh Khel police checkpoint in nearby Bannu, where 15 police personnel were martyred. That incident intensified concern over the resurgence of militant violence in southern Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and prompted Islamabad to raise the matter with Kabul.

Lakki Marwat and adjoining districts have faced repeated militant attacks in recent months, particularly against police posts, patrols and public areas. Security officials say the region’s proximity to former militant routes and difficult terrain makes counterterrorism operations more challenging.

For Pakistan, the renewed violence carries serious security and public confidence implications. Repeated attacks on law enforcement and civilians increase pressure on federal and provincial authorities to strengthen intelligence coordination, border security and emergency response systems.

Authorities are expected to expand the investigation using forensic material collected from the blast site. The government has also signalled that law enforcement agencies will receive improved training, equipment and operational support as part of a renewed push to protect citizens and prevent further attacks.
