Barkhan Operation: Five Soldiers Martyred, Seven Militants Killed

Pakistan’s security forces killed seven militants during an intelligence-based operation in the Nosham area of Barkhan district in Balochistan on Wednesday night, according to an official report citing the Inter-Services Public Relations. The operation also resulted in the martyrdom of five security personnel, including a field officer, making it one of the day’s most significant security developments.

The operation was launched by troops of the Pakistan Army and Frontier Corps Balochistan after information pointed to the presence of militants in the area. Security personnel moved into the mountainous zone as part of a sanitisation mission aimed at locating armed elements and preventing further attacks in the region.

Officials said a group of militants was detected during the operation and was engaged by the troops. Seven militants were killed in the exchange of fire, while weapons, ammunition and explosive material were recovered from their possession, indicating that the group was prepared for further hostile activity.

In its statement, the military’s media wing described the militants as linked to an Indian-backed network and said operations in the surrounding area were continuing to clear any remaining threat. The official account also reaffirmed that counterterrorism efforts under the Azm-e-Istehkam framework would continue with full force across the country.

The five martyred personnel were identified as Major Tauseef Ahmed Bhatti, Naik Fida Hussain, Sepoy Zakir Hussain, Sepoy Suhail Ahmed and Sepoy Muhammad Ayaz. Their sacrifice has been presented by officials as part of Pakistan’s wider campaign to restore peace in Balochistan and protect communities from militant violence.

Balochistan has remained a major focus of security operations because of its difficult terrain, porous borders and repeated attacks on security forces, civilians and infrastructure. The province’s strategic importance has increased further due to development projects, transport corridors and energy routes, making stability there a national priority.

The latest encounter comes amid a broader security challenge in which law enforcement agencies have been carrying out intelligence-led actions against militant networks. Officials have repeatedly said that such operations are designed not only to eliminate armed groups but also to break their logistical support, financing channels and local movement networks.

For Pakistan, the Barkhan operation carries both security and symbolic weight.
