Finland to close Islamabad embassy again after brief return

Finland has decided to shut its embassy in Islamabad this summer, ending a diplomatic presence that had only recently been restored after a decade-long gap. The move marks another reversal in Helsinki’s representation in Pakistan and adds to a broader reassessment of some overseas missions.

According to details cited by the publication, the embassy will continue operating until authorities formally announce the final closure date. Finnish officials have attributed the decision to strategic and operational considerations rather than any single immediate trigger.

The embassy had resumed work in Pakistan in 2022, but its consular role remained limited, with many visa and passport-related services already handled through other Finnish missions, including Abu Dhabi. That limited footprint appears to have shaped the latest decision on whether the mission should remain open.

The development also comes after Sweden suspended embassy operations in Pakistan in 2023. Finland has similarly announced closures in Afghanistan and Myanmar, indicating that the Islamabad decision is part of a wider review of diplomatic deployments rather than an isolated administrative change.
