China urges Pakistan to clear $220m energy payment backlog

China has asked Pakistan to settle about $220 million in outstanding payments owed to United Energy Pakistan, a move that adds pressure on Islamabad to address another financial bottleneck in the energy sector. The request was conveyed through official channels and reflects Beijing's concern over delayed payments to a major Chinese investor.

According to the report, the dues relate to gas supplied by United Energy Pakistan to Sui Southern Gas Company. Officials said the payment delays have strained the company's operations and raised questions about liquidity in a sector already burdened by circular debt and regulatory friction.

Pakistani authorities, however, point to pending tax refunds as a key obstacle, with SSGC arguing it cannot fully clear the payments until its own receivables are released. The dispute illustrates how interlocking liabilities continue to weaken the financial chain that supports energy production and distribution.

The issue matters beyond one company. A prolonged standoff could damage investor confidence at a time when Pakistan is trying to preserve foreign participation in strategic sectors, particularly energy, where capital needs remain high and operational certainty is crucial.
