LHC seeks AGP response in Punjab defamation law challenge

The Lahore High Court has sought replies from the attorney general for Pakistan and Punjab’s law officers in petitions challenging the Punjab Defamation Act 2024. The case was heard by Justice Anwaar Hussain after multiple petitions were filed by journalists, media bodies and civil society groups.

Petitioners argue that the province lacked the authority to legislate on defamation and that the law intrudes on an area that falls under federal jurisdiction. They also objected to provisions they say give extraordinary protection to constitutional office-holders, judges and military officials.

Lawyers for the petitioners further told the court that recent official statements on social media showed how the law could be used to intimidate critics and journalists. The provincial government has been ordered to place the Punjab Assembly debate record before the court.

The hearing was adjourned until next Tuesday, keeping alive a closely watched legal fight over whether the law is a legitimate anti-defamation measure or a threat to press freedom in Punjab.
