Punjab considers longer school closures and shorter market hours

Punjab is weighing a broad energy-conservation plan as Pakistan feels the impact of global fuel supply disruption linked to the Middle East conflict. According to sources cited by Geo News, the provincial government is reviewing recommendations that include extending school holidays, reducing market operating hours and tightening rules on non-essential activity.

Officials have also been advised to examine fuel rationing options, including a coupon-based or digital distribution mechanism for petrol and diesel. The recommendations further propose work-from-home arrangements for private organisations, a ban on non-essential events and wider use of public transport to reduce pressure on fuel consumption.

The proposed plan also includes extending holidays in educational institutions until April 15 and shifting schools toward hybrid learning. Other suggested steps include limiting decorative lighting, shutting down LED billboards and operating streetlights in alternate modes after 10pm as part of a wider push to manage energy use more aggressively.
