Karachi braces for more rain after storm kills 19

Karachi remained under weather stress after a violent overnight storm killed at least 19 people and damaged homes, roads and utility infrastructure across the city. Officials said many of the deaths were caused by collapsing roofs and walls, falling trees and lightning strikes, with Baldia Town among the worst-hit areas.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department warned that additional spells of rain could hit the city as cloud masses over the sea move inland. Forecasters said moderate to heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds remained possible, though wind intensity may stay below the extreme gusts recorded a day earlier. The highest rainfall during the previous spell was reported in Korangi.

Authorities said rescue work continued in multiple neighbourhoods, while residents in several localities reported injuries, uprooted trees and prolonged electricity outages. K-Electric said a large majority of feeders remained active, but rain-affected feeders were still being restored. The weather system is also expected to affect other districts of Sindh, with the PMD warning of lightning, isolated hail and another possible rainy spell later in the month.
